How many chickens should I buy?

The amount of eggs that your chickens will lay, depends on the breed of chicken that you have. Some breeds do not lay in the colder months and egg production can also be effected by extreme hot weather. However on average, each chicken will lay 4 times a week. If your family generally purchases one carton of eggs per week, we suggest 2-3 chickens. If your family uses 2 egg cartons per week, we suggest 5-6 chickens. If your family uses 3 cartons of eggs per week, we suggest 9-10 chickens. But as long as you have adequate space and shelter, and are abiding by your local councils regulations, you can never really have too many chickens! Everyone loves fresh eggs!

At what age will my chickens start to lay?

Most Pullets will begin to lay at around 5-6 months of age, however this can be largely dependent on the breed of chicken and time of year in which they reach point of lay age.

It is important to keep this in mind if you are purchasing "point of lay" chickens in winter, as they may not actually begin to lay until spring.

How do I care for my new chicken?

Your chickens will require a safe and secure coop or shelter to stay out of bad weather and sleep in at night, and space to forage and explore during the day. It is important to provide a breezy shaded area for your chickens to stay cool during hot weather, and a roost to allow them to feel safe and secure.

Your chickens will require a high quality layer feed to keep them healthy and laying regularly, along with clean and fresh drinking water. Your chickens will also enjoy treats such as mealworms and food scraps, however be aware that some food scraps are harmful to chickens such as potato, garlic, onion, avocado, raw beans, citrus fruit and anything processed or spoiled.
